The Statements of Doctrine Series
The Goal of a Statement of Doctrine
The Goal The primary goal of writing a statment of doctrine is to know what Scripture says about any given topic. A doctrinal statement can also be used to answer questions from others about what is believed to be true or to show from Scripture why a person lives life a certain way. This doctrinal statement is built on Scripture which means that it is not based on a catechism, creed, or other extra-biblical material.
Canon of Scripture The 'Statement of Beliefs' (described below) is made from an exclusive list of passages which match the canon of Scripture being used by this author. The 'List of Passages' (described below) is an inclusive listing. It inlcudes any and all passages that can occur in the common Canons of Scripture, some of which include the Apocryphal books, as these can come up in any discussion or topic. This is not meant to imply that they do or do not belong in the Canon of Scripture.
Categories of Doctrinal Statement Information
Statement of Beliefs This is a short, concise list of what is believed to be true on the topic involved. These concepts come directly from Scripture and are supported by passages of Scripture below. This is made from an exclusive set of Scripture which follows the Canon of Scritpture used by this author.
Commentary This is additional information on the 'Statement of Beliefs' which answer common questions or deal with issues raised by different denominations. This category often deals with issues, concepts, or doctrines that do not come directly from Scripture.
List of Passages This is a set of passages that relate to the topic placed in roughly chronological order. It is an inclusive list that inlcudes any and all passages that can occur in the common Canons of Scripture as these can come up in any discussion or topic. The primary example of differing canons of Scripture are the inclusion or exclusion of the Apocryphal books. The use of these passages is not meant to imply that these books do or do not belong in the Canon of Scripture, but merely recognizes that some people will discuss them in the topic.
Referenced Passages This is the full length copy of the passages of Scripture used in the topic and listed above. These passages are grouped together by theme to match the statements of belief above so that support for each belief can be found quickly and easily. They are taken from the King James Version primarily because it is available under copyright laws and is not meant to suggest this translation is perfect or the only translation which can be used.
