Disciplines of Worship: Frequent Fasting
Focusing on the Spiritual
Intensity The time of fasting is not always much in quantity, but it is high in quality since it focuses on the spiritual aspects of life and the One Most High. While fasting is a physical act of not eating food, the spiritual effects are astonishing and can be summed up in the word 'intensifying'. Our perception of the Almighty's will for our lives and our prayers to Him both become more intense.
Commandments Whether we fast or not is largely our choice! The only passage of Scripture commanding a fast is connected with the Day of Atonement. When Messiah spoke of fasting, He did not state that it is or is not to be done, but instead acknowldges that when fasting is done, it should not be done as the hypocrites who like to be seen.
Group Fast Sometimes a group fast is called for a large issue. Because of the intensity of the spiritual realm during a fast, it is recommended that a person learn personal fasting before joining a group fast. Starting for short periods and gradually learning longer periods of fasting is a valid theme.
